Stainless Steel 316L (UNS S31603)
SS 316L combines the chloride pitting resistance of molybdenum with a low carbon maximum (0.030%) to eliminate carbide precipitation during welding. It is the premier standard for chemical process lines, pharmaceutical cleanrooms, and food & beverage facilities throughout Qatar.
Material Quick Reference
| Material Classification | Extra-Low Carbon Molybdenum Austenitic Stainless Steel |
|---|---|
| Pitting Resistance (PREN) | 23 - 25 |
| Temperature Limits | -196ยฐC to +450ยฐC |
| Governing Specifications | ASTM A312 TP316L, ASME BPE, ASTM A403 WP316L, ASTM A182 F316L |
Typical Engineering Applications
- Sanitary dairy and food processing lines
- Pharmaceutical WFI and pure steam loops (ASME BPE)
- Desalination chemical dosing (hypochlorite, coagulants)
- Refinery sour condensate return
Chemical Environment & Corrosion Resistance
High resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride solutions and broad organic/inorganic acid media.
Performance in Qatar's Coastal & Industrial Climate
Widely specified across Qatar industrial projects as the default stainless steel grade for all welded installations.
Welding & Fabrication Guidelines
Welded via GTAW using ER316L filler wire or automated orbital welding without filler. Pure argon backing purge is mandatory.
Positive Material Identification (PMI) Requirements
XRF for Cr, Ni, Mo; OES or certified MTC verifying carbon <= 0.030%.
Key Advantages
- Eliminates weld decay
- Ideal for automated orbital welding
- Exceptional electropolishing capability (Ra < 0.38ยตm)
Engineering Limitations
- Subject to pitting in stagnant warm seawater; Duplex is preferred for raw seawater
