Stainless Steel 304 (UNS S30400)
Stainless Steel 304 is the most widely utilized austenitic stainless steel globally, composed of approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It offers good atmospheric corrosion resistance and excellent formability for non-marine, indoor, and moderate industrial applications in Qatar.
Material Quick Reference
| Material Classification | Austenitic Stainless Steel (18/8 Chrome-Nickel) |
|---|---|
| Pitting Resistance (PREN) | 18 - 20 |
| Temperature Limits | -196°C to +550°C |
| Governing Specifications | ASTM A312 (Pipe), ASTM A403 (Fittings), ASTM A182 (Flanges), ASME B31.3 |
Typical Engineering Applications
- Potable water storage tanks
- Architectural handrails and supports
- Commercial kitchen piping
- Low-pressure utility lines in air-conditioned plants
- HVAC condensate loops
Chemical Environment & Corrosion Resistance
Resistant to oxidizing acids (nitric acid) and general organic chemicals. Vulnerable to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments above 50 ppm chlorides.
Performance in Qatar's Coastal & Industrial Climate
Suitable for indoor, conditioned industrial facilities in Qatar. NOT recommended for uninsulated outdoor coastal installations or direct seawater contact due to rapid chloride pitting.
Welding & Fabrication Guidelines
Welded via GTAW or SMAW using AWS ER308 or E308 consumables. High-purity argon backing purge (< 50 ppm O2) required to prevent sugary root oxidation.
Positive Material Identification (PMI) Requirements
XRF analyzer verification confirming 18.0–20.0% Cr and 8.0–10.5% Ni.
Key Advantages
- Economical stainless grade
- Outstanding cryogenic toughness
- Readily available across standard sizes
Engineering Limitations
- Prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking (CSCC) above 60°C
- Susceptible to sensitization in weld heat-affected zones unless 304L is selected
