Desalination Plant Piping Engineering & Contracting in Qatar
With zero natural freshwater rivers, Qatar relies almost entirely on seawater desalination for drinking water and industrial use. Qatar Piping supplies, fabricates, and installs ultra-corrosion-resistant Duplex, Super Duplex, and non-metallic piping systems for Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) and Multi-Stage Flash (MSF) plants across Qatar.
Typical Piping Systems
- High-pressure RO membrane feed piping headers (70 to 85 bar)
- Energy Recovery Device (ERD) high-pressure interconnecting loops
- Concentrated brine discharge outfall piping
- Seawater intake headers and intake screen manifold piping
- Chemical pretreatment dosing (sodium hypochlorite, bisulfite, antiscalant)
Common Materials
- Super Duplex UNS S32750 / 2507 (PREN >= 42)
- Duplex UNS S31803 / S32205 (PREN >= 35)
- 6% Molybdenum Super Austenitic Alloys (e.g. 254 SMO / UNS S31254)
- Glass-Reinforced Epoxy (GRE) & HDPE for intake/outfall
Industry Requirements & Qatar Challenges
Regulatory Requirements: Absolute resistance to warm Arabian Gulf seawater (chlorides up to 45,000 ppm TDS, temperature exceeding 35°C), high operating pressures up to 85 bar in reverse osmosis membrane racks, and zero iron contamination of RO membranes.
Qatar Engineering Challenges: Severe crevice corrosion and pitting in stagnant seawater; microstructural precipitation of brittle intermetallic sigma phase during duplex welding; high hydraulic vibration around high-pressure pumps.
Execution Methodology
Segregated clean-bay fabrication, computerized heat input control (0.5–1.5 kJ/mm), ER2594 welding with argon-nitrogen backing purge, and ferric chloride corrosion testing.
QA/QC & Testing Protocol
Ferrite scope measurement (35–65% ferrite), ASTM A923 Method C ferric chloride pitting test at 40°C, 100% PAUT/RT weld examination, hydrostatic proof test at 1.5x design pressure.
