METALLURGICAL TECHNICAL GUIDE

ASTM A106 Grade B / C

ASTM A106 Grade B is the standard seamless carbon steel pipe specification for high-temperature and high-pressure service in petroleum refineries, gas treatment plants, boiler rooms, and petrochemical complexes across Qatar.

Material Quick Reference

Material ClassificationSeamless Carbon Steel for High-Temperature Service
Pitting Resistance (PREN)N/A
Temperature Limits-29°C to +425°C
Governing SpecificationsASTM A106, ASME SA106, ASME B36.10M, ASME B31.3 / B31.1

Typical Engineering Applications

  • High-pressure process steam and condensate mains
  • Refinery oil and hydrocarbon process spools
  • Natural gas transmission and regulator stations
  • High-pressure boiler feed water systems

Chemical Environment & Corrosion Resistance

Suitable for non-corrosive hydrocarbons, dry natural gas, steam, and water. Requires internal/external coatings or corrosion allowance for corrosive media.

Performance in Qatar's Coastal & Industrial Climate

The industry-standard specification for high-temperature process piping in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed refineries.

Welding & Fabrication Guidelines

Welded using GTAW root with ER70S-6 wire and SMAW fill/cap with low-hydrogen E7018 electrodes. Preheat required per ASME B31.3 based on thickness.

Positive Material Identification (PMI) Requirements

Spark OES chemical analysis to verify Carbon <= 0.30%, Manganese 0.29–1.06%, Carbon Equivalent <= 0.43 for sour service.

Key Advantages

  • High tensile strength (min 415 MPa)
  • Reliable seamless construction with zero longitudinal seam defects
  • Readily weldable

Engineering Limitations

  • Susceptible to atmospheric corrosion in Qatar coastal environments without protective coatings; prone to embrittlement below -29°C
