ASTM A333 Grade 6 (LTCS)
Standard carbon steels undergo ductile-to-brittle transition at cold temperatures. ASTM A333 Grade 6 is specifically killed and heat-treated (normalized) to guarantee Charpy V-notch impact toughness at design temperatures down to -45°C, making it the industry standard for chilled hydrocarbons and gas refrigeration in Qatar.
Material Quick Reference
| Material Classification | Seamless & Welded Carbon Steel Pipe for Low-Temperature Service |
|---|---|
| Pitting Resistance (PREN) | N/A |
| Temperature Limits | -45°C to +350°C |
| Governing Specifications | ASTM A333 Gr. 6, ASME SA333, ASME B31.3 Table 323.2.2 |
Typical Engineering Applications
- Natural Gas Liquid (NGL) recovery plants
- Refrigerated LPG storage and loading terminals
- Ethane and propane chilling loops
- Chilled process lines operating below -29°C
Chemical Environment & Corrosion Resistance
Non-corrosive cold hydrocarbons, methane, ethane, propane, and refrigeration media.
Performance in Qatar's Coastal & Industrial Climate
Extensively installed in Ras Laffan NGL fractionation plants and gas processing units.
Welding & Fabrication Guidelines
Welded using GTAW root and SMAW with E7018-1 low-temperature impact tested electrodes. Preheating mandatory.
Positive Material Identification (PMI) Requirements
Tensile test and Charpy V-notch impact test reports at -45°C verified against MTC 3.1.
Key Advantages
- Impact tested at -45°C (minimum 18J average)
- High tensile and yield strength at low temperatures
Engineering Limitations
- Not suitable for cryogenic LNG service (-162°C); stainless steel or 9% nickel steel required below -45°C
