Stainless Steel 316 (UNS S31600)
Stainless Steel 316 is the benchmark corrosion-resistant alloy across Qatarβs coastal and process industries. The addition of 2.0% to 3.0% molybdenum substantially boosts its resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, and acidic process chemicals compared to 304.
Material Quick Reference
| Material Classification | Molybdenum-Bearing Austenitic Stainless Steel |
|---|---|
| Pitting Resistance (PREN) | 23 - 25 |
| Temperature Limits | -196Β°C to +600Β°C |

Typical Engineering Applications
- Petrochemical process piping
- Coastal utility piping runs in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed
- Marine vessel exhaust and cooling lines
- Desalination auxiliary lines
Chemical Environment & Corrosion Resistance
Resistant to sulfurous, acetic, and phosphoric acids, as well as atmospheric marine chlorides up to moderate concentrations.
Performance in Qatar's Coastal & Industrial Climate
Excellent for outdoor coastal atmospheres in Qatar, provided washdown cycles or rain prevent heavy salt encrustation.
Welding & Fabrication Guidelines
Welded with ER316 / E316 filler wire. Strict purge with 99.999% argon.
Positive Material Identification (PMI) Requirements
XRF verification confirming Mo content between 2.0% and 3.0%, Cr 16.0β18.0%, Ni 10.0β14.0%.
Key Advantages
- Substantially higher pitting resistance than 304
- Good elevated temperature creep strength
Engineering Limitations
- Sensitization risk during heavy multi-pass welding; use 316L for thick welded spools
