Stainless Steel 304L (UNS S30403)
SS 304L is the low-carbon modification of SS 304 with carbon restricted to maximum 0.030%. This low carbon content prevents the precipitation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries during welding, maintaining intergranular corrosion resistance in the as-welded state without requiring post-weld solution annealing.
Material Quick Reference
| Material Classification | Extra-Low Carbon Austenitic Stainless Steel |
|---|---|
| Pitting Resistance (PREN) | 18 - 20 |
| Temperature Limits | -196°C to +425°C |
| Governing Specifications | ASTM A312 TP304L, ASTM A403 WP304L, ASTM A182 F304L, ASME Section II Part A |
Typical Engineering Applications
- Heavy-wall welded piping spools
- Chemical processing equipment where post-weld annealing is impossible
- Cryogenic piping systems down to -196°C
Chemical Environment & Corrosion Resistance
Identical general corrosion resistance to SS 304 with superior resistance to intergranular attack in the weld HAZ.
Performance in Qatar's Coastal & Industrial Climate
Preferred over standard 304 whenever field or shop welding is involved without subsequent solution heat treatment.
Welding & Fabrication Guidelines
Welded using ER308L or E308L consumables. Low heat input recommended to minimize distortion.
Positive Material Identification (PMI) Requirements
XRF for Cr (18-20%) and Ni (8-12%); Optical Emission Spectrometry (OES) required to verify carbon < 0.030%.
Key Advantages
- No risk of weld decay / intergranular corrosion
- Superior ductility and impact energy at cryogenic temperatures
Engineering Limitations
- Slightly lower mechanical yield strength compared to standard 304 at elevated temperatures
