METALLURGICAL TECHNICAL GUIDE

Super Duplex 2507 (UNS S32750)

Super Duplex 2507 is an ultra-high performance alloy engineered for exceptionally aggressive chloride and acidic environments. With a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) exceeding 42 and yield strength exceeding 550 MPa, it withstands warm seawater and severe sour gas service.

Material Quick Reference

Material ClassificationSuper Duplex Stainless Steel (25% Cr, 7% Ni, 4% Mo, 0.28% N)
Pitting Resistance (PREN)>= 42
Temperature Limits-50°C to +250°C
Governing SpecificationsASTM A790 UNS S32750, ASTM A815 WPS32750, ASTM A182 F53, NORSOK M-601 / M-630

Typical Engineering Applications

  • Warm raw seawater intake and brine concentration lines in desalination plants
  • High-pressure subsea flowlines and manifold spools
  • Aggressive sulfuric and phosphoric acid processes
  • Flue gas cleaning and offshore firewater deluge systems

Chemical Environment & Corrosion Resistance

Immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking in seawater up to 60°C; outstanding resistance to organic and inorganic acids.

Performance in Qatar's Coastal & Industrial Climate

Critical for Qatar SWRO desalination facilities where seawater temperatures exceed 35°C during summer months.

Welding & Fabrication Guidelines

Welded via GTAW with ER2594 filler wire and 99.999% argon + 2% nitrogen backing gas to compensate for nitrogen loss in the weld root.

Positive Material Identification (PMI) Requirements

XRF verification: 25% Cr, 7% Ni, 4% Mo; Microstructural metallographic examination for absence of intermetallic phases per ASTM A923 Method C.

Key Advantages

  • PREN >= 42 provides exceptional pitting and crevice corrosion immunity
  • Exceptional yield strength (> 550 MPa)

Engineering Limitations

  • Stringent welding heat input control required to prevent deleterious intermetallic sigma (σ) and chi (χ) phases
