Piping Fabrication Quality Control: Inspection Stages & Quality Handover Dossiers
In pressurized industrial piping, quality control is not an afterthoughtβit is a continuous, document-driven engineering workflow executed from raw material intake to final system handover. A single unrecorded weld or unverified heat number can halt commissioning audits. This guide presents Qatar Pipingβs 7-stage QA/QC workflow and final handover dossier architecture.
1. The 7 Stages of Piping Quality Control
Stage 1: Material Receiving & Verification
Upon arrival at the workshop, all pipes, fittings, flanges, and consumables undergo receiving inspection: visual check for shipping damage, wall thickness ultrasonic measurement, dimensional checks, review of original EN 10204 3.1 MTCs, and 100% Positive Material Identification (PMI) on alloy items.
Stage 2: Material Traceability & Heat Number Transfer
When a pipe joint is cut into individual spool lengths, the original mill heat number, manufacturer mark, and pipe schedule must be transferred immediately onto each cut piece using vibro-etching, low-stress stencils, or permanent paint markers before the remnant leaves the cutting station.
Stage 3: Fit-Up & Root Gap Inspection
Before any tack welding begins, certified QC welding inspectors check the joint fit-up in alignment jigs: bevel angle (37.5Β° ± 2.5Β°), root face (1.6mm), root gap (2.4mm to 3.2mm), and internal misalignment (hi-lo ≤ 1.5mm). For alloy lines, oxygen purge levels are measured and logged.
Stage 4: In-Process Welding Inspection
Inspectors monitor production welding against approved WPS sheets: checking preheat temperatures, interpass temperatures using calibrated digital pyrometers, electrode baking records, and welding consumable batch numbers.
Stage 5: Visual & Dimensional Inspection
Completed spools undergo 100% visual inspection (VT) by CSWIP / AWS certified inspectors checking for undercutting, excess weld reinforcement, spatter, and porosity. Full dimensional verification is conducted against PFI ES-3 standards (face-to-face, center-to-face, flange rotation, bolt-hole straddle).
Stage 6: Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
Spools are queued in certified NDT bays for volumetric examination (RT or PAUT) and surface testing (PT or MT) per project specification ratios, witnessed and signed off by ASNT Level II technicians.
Stage 7: Hydrostatic Testing & Coating Verification
Spools undergo hydrostatic testing in dedicated pressure test cells with calibrated pressure recorders. Following testing, spools are blasted to Sa 2.5 and coated, with dry film thickness (DFT) verified per ISO 19840.
2. The Final Quality Handover Dossier
At project completion, Qatar Piping compiles a comprehensive Handover Dossier containing:
- Approved Project Quality Plan (PQP) and Inspection & Test Plan (ITP)
- Qualified WPS, PQR, and Welder WPQ records
- As-Built Piping Isometric Drawings with finalized weld numbers
- Weld History Logs (linking joint number, heat numbers, welder ID, NDT report numbers)
- Original EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates
- PMI and NDT Inspection Reports (RT, PAUT, PT, MT)
- Certified Hydrostatic Test Charts and Calibration Certificates
- Painting Inspection Reports and Release Notes
